My day job can really distract me from what I want to write… But I find research to be positively delightful. Scouring libraries and news websites for data. Using sticky tabs to mark every relevant page, writing colorful sticky squares of summarized data… Color coding my research. It is absolute fun.
And as midnight nears while I write, my groggy caffeine-deprived brain swims in contentment amidst papery stacks of sorted data. And I know, given time and the ability to concentrate, that my ‘humongous brain’ (as I was once called) will be able to break down the stacks into useful references for what I need to compose.
Writing, really, is being able to use your own words to communicate what others have said… perhaps. But good writing can make it more succinct. Good writing can make it clearer, or translate it for the lay person.
Regardless of fiction or nonfiction, I do love writing.
