When I was in fifth grade, there were a slew of standardized tests that I did very well in. The end result was that I got to join a summer camp which had a creative writing workshop for kids. If any program contributed to my creativity as a child, this was it.

For a few weeks, we learned how to write stories, how to develop our descriptions, characters, plot – in small projects that could withstand a kid’s attention span. Must’ve written over half a dozen pieces over the course of this summer camp alone.

I remember writing adventure stories in dazzling locales and having it critiqued by my peers and our instructor. It was a lot of fun.

On the side, we made tie-dye shirts, wove plastic lanyard keychains, and lots of other arts and crafts.

It was one of those first world opportunities that my dad brought us to the States for. And I just hope, someday, to bring more opportunities like this back home for the kids of the Philippines. 🙂
